I am a consultant ENT surgeon and subspecialist rhinologist at Southampton University Hospitals. I was a trainee on the south coast ENT registrar rotation. Throughout 1997 I was clinical ENT fellow in Cape Town, South Africa and I have spent further periods of training as rhinology fellow in various ENT departments throughout Europe and the USA.

Although I see a wide range of ENT problems operatively, I specialise in the management of nasal and sinus problems in adults and children. I perform minimally invasive endoscopic sinus surgery including extended roles of frontal sinus surgery and lacrimal surgery. I undertake rhinoplastic surgery utilising both closed and open (external) rhinoplasty techniques as well as nasal reconstruction. I have a major interest in chronic facial pain. I also perform otoplasty (ear pinning) surgery in adults and children. The management of chronic snoring and sleep apnoea is one of my major interests.

My research interests include the management of allergic and non-allergic rhinitis, nasal polyposis, snoring and sleep apnoea.

I regularly teach on Rhinoplasty and Advanced Sinus Surgery courses in the UK and abroad, as well as teaching on training courses for surgical examinations in the UK.

Mr Hellier was appointed ENT Consultant to Southampton University Hospital in 2001 and to the Royal Hampshire County Hospital Winchester in 2003. He also holds an honorary contract at Salisbury Hospital.

He undertook his postgraduate training in London including the Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital, St George’s Hospital and the National Hospital for Neurosurgery. He developed his paediatric interest with training at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. He spent a year as the first English Otology/Ear Surgery Fellow at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne Australia, where he further developed his expertise in ear surgery. He was awarded the Journal of Laryngology and Otology Fellowship, the Lionel Colledge Fellowship, the Kings Fund Fellowship and the Ethicon Fellowship for further training at the Portmann Ear Institute, Bordeaux and the House Ear Clinic in Los Angeles, USA.

Mr Hellier consults and operates on a wide range of general ENT problems. He has a special interest in ear conditions including hearing and balance disorders, tinnitus, chronic ear disease and cholesteatoma in both adults and children. He performs a wide range of ear surgery including open and closed cavity mastoid procedures and surgery for otosclerosis. He also has a special interest in children’s ENT including grommets, adenoid and tonsillar surgery, prominent ears (pinnaplasty) and airway disorders.

He continues to have research and teaching interests. He has written a book Essential ENT published in the UK and many other countries worldwide, which won the Asher Prize for Medical Writers from the Society of Authors. He has contributed to a number of other ENT textbooks and journals and has been Deputy Editor of ENT NEWS.

After education at Winchester College and Brasenose College, Oxford, I undertook postgraduate ENT training in Oxford, Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital, London and Cambridge. I was awarded the inaugural Graham Fraser Fellowship, allowing me to develop my skills in ear surgery and cochlear implantation with Professor William Gibson in Sydney, Australia.

I was appointed as Consultant ENT Surgeon at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust in 2000. I perform cochlear implants and bone-anchored hearing aids with the University of Southampton Auditory Implant Service providing a service across the south of England.

I see general ENT problems and specialise in the management of ear disease, including hearing loss, tinnitus and balance disorders in adults and children. I perform surgery for hearing problems (including stapes surgery for otosclerosis) and repeated ear infections, with a particular expertise in closed cavity surgery for cholesteatoma. I have a close link with the Community Audiology Service and see children with glue ear (otitis media with effusion) and tonsil and adenoid problems.

In 2005, I became an examiner for the MRCS and was elected Chair of the Court of Examiners of the Royal College of Surgeons of England from 2014 to July 2017. I represented RCS England on the Intercollegiate Committee for Basic Surgical Examinations overseeing the MRCS and DO-HNS exams. I continue as Convenor for MRCS exams in Colombo, Sri Lanka, where I have also been invited regularly as external examiner for the University of Colombo MD exam. I was a member of the Specialist Advisory Committees for ENT and Audiovestibular Medicine from 2012 to 2017 overseeing Registrar training in both specialties in the UK and Ireland. I was elected to the Council of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in July 2017, where I chair the Future Surgeons Forum, supporting medical students and newly qualified doctors wishing to pursue careers in surgery. I am a consultant otorhinolaryngologist/head, neck and thyroid surgeon with a specialist interest in head, neck and facial cancers, thyroid surgery, salivary glands, voice and swallowing disorders, LASER and Robotic surgery.

Having graduated in medicine from Manchester University I underwent basic surgical training in Manchester and London. I obtained the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in Otolaryngology with Surgery in General in 1997. I then specialised in Otolaryngology, training in London for the next six years. I obtained the Specialist Intercollegiate Fellowship in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery in 2002. I completed fellowships at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA and the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Adelaide, Australia (head and neck surgery, voice and sinus surgery).

I completed Masters degrees in Voice and Swallowing (University of Newcastle), Evidence Based Medicine (Oxford University), a Diploma in Robotic Surgery (University of Lorraine) and a Master of Studies Degree at the University of Cambridge in Genomics.

Since August 2004, I have been a consultant otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeon at Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust and Lymington Hospital. I have held many additional roles in the Trust including Chairman of the Head and Neck Cancer Service and Lead Clinician for ENT.

I am a fundraiser of Headline (Southampton Head and Neck Cancer Charity Fund) and a Trustee for the National Association of Laryngectomees. I am Past-President of the British Voice Association and current Treasurer of the Laryngology and Rhinology Section of the Royal Society of Medicine. I  have been cited in Who’s Who in Medicine.
